Why distance matters

Three things that cannot be done remotely

    Surveying what is there

    On a plant that has grown over decades the documents never quite match. Recording the actual state means standing in front of it: opening terminal boxes, reading rating plates, counting what is actually installed. Those hours are the reason a retrofit holds later — and no amount of file exchange replaces them.

    Commissioning

    Start-up reveals what the drawing could not show. Then it is decided in hours, not days, whether someone can come. One hour of travel becomes an appointment the same morning; four hours become the next working day.

  3. 03

    The first conversation

    A meeting where you can see the plant replaces three phone calls and two misunderstandings. For an enquiry from the region we usually suggest simply coming over before anyone writes a quotation.

The work in detail

What electrical design here actually deals with

New plants on a blank sheet are the exception. The normal case is a plant that has run for twenty years, been extended three times, and whose documents no longer know about the last rebuild. These are the five situations we meet most often here.

    Documents that no longer match the plant

    The 1998 diagram follows DIN 40719, the 2015 extension EN 81346, and last summer’s change is a pencil note in the folder. Before anything is designed, the actual state has to be recorded: opening terminal boxes, reading rating plates, tracing cores. A list of the differences between drawing and reality falls out of that work — and for maintenance it is often worth more than the new drawing itself.

  2. 02

    Rebuilding while the plant runs

    In food and beverage production the shutdown windows are short and fall at night or at weekends. That changes the design, not just the schedule: each step has to be self-contained so the plant starts up again afterwards. Terminal diagrams that do not reflect this cost the electrician at three in the morning exactly the time nobody has.

  3. 03

    The customer’s CAE system, not ours

    Companies here work in EPLAN Electric P8, others in WSCAD, older holdings sit in ELCAD. An external designer who masters only one system either forces a migration or delivers a foreign body into the existing set. We design in the system the plant is documented in — with its part master, its macros and the designation system already in use there.

    Retrofitting discontinued controllers

    Simatic S5 with ET200 peripherals still runs in more plants in this region than one would assume — spare parts come from the second-hand market. In a changeover the controller is the easy part. The work lies in the interfaces to the existing peripherals, in whether the enclosure capacity is sufficient at all, and in twenty years of changes that never flowed back into the documents.

  5. 05

    Manufacturing data for the panel builder

    Many panel builders in the region manufacture from drilling patterns, terminal and cable lists taken straight from the design. If the layout planning is only a drawing and not a data set, measuring and reworking happen in the workshop. That is exactly the point at which 3D layout planning pays for itself — or does not.
