Digitising legacy drawings & converting schematics

A scanned schematic is not a digital schematic. It is a picture. You can look at it and print it, but you cannot evaluate it, search it or change it without redrawing everything by hand. That difference decides whether digitisation is worth anything.

We transfer existing schematics into a consistently structured CAE system. The starting point can be paper documents, scans, DWG files or projects from superseded systems.

What matters is the result: not a graphic but a project with real devices, terminals, cables and cross-references. Only then can parts lists be generated, changes tracked and reports run – and only then does the effort pay.

During the transfer we standardise the presentation: consistent page structure, coherent labelling, maintained article assignment. Where the legacy material contradicts itself, we surface the discrepancies rather than quietly harmonising them.

Not every page has to reach the same level. A tiered approach is often more economical: active plant sections fully intelligent, rarely needed areas filed as a clean graphic with a reference.

When this service is needed

  • Plant documentation exists on paper or as scans.
  • A legacy system is being replaced and the projects should come along.
  • Schematics exist as DWG and should become evaluable.
  • Before an extension, the installed base needs a consistent state.

Process

How we work together

  1. 01

    Sample page

We first transfer a representative page and agree it with you. That settles the target level before volume is created.

  2. 02

    Agreement

Template, labelling and article assignment are agreed. At the same time we decide which areas are transferred fully and which simplified.

  3. 03

    Transfer

Work runs in packages with interim reviews, so comparison against the plant stays possible while it is still cheap.

  4. 04

    Reconciliation

Deviations between legacy drawings and the plant are documented and clarified with you – they are the real find in these projects.

Result

What you have at the end

The greatest value of these projects often lies not in the new drawing but in the list of deviations found along the way. Nobody knows those beforehand.

  • Structured CAE project with evaluable devices
  • Harmonised presentation and labelling
  • Parts lists, terminal and cable reports
  • List of the deviations found against the legacy base

Frequently asked

Can this be automated?

Only partly. Geometry can be taken from a DWG, and practically nothing from a scan. The real work is not drawing but assignment: which symbol is which device, which terminal belongs where. That cannot be guessed.

What does it cost per page?

That depends on page density and target level, and both only become clear with the sample page. So we always start there – a flat rate before the sample page would not be serious.

Do all pages really have to be transferred?

No, and usually that is not economical either. We fully transfer the sections that are actually changed and evaluated, and file the rest cleanly referenced.

A phone call or three lines is enough. From the very start you talk to the people who will later work on your project – not to a distribution list.
